Registrations at Queensland Children's Hospital School
(South Brisbane campuses)
Our
student cohort is unique and ever-changing, with students joining us for
classroom or ward-based teaching either as admitted patients of the Queensland
Children's Hospital, as siblings of patients, or as children of parents
receiving treatment at an adult hospital. The criteria for student registration
eligibility is outlined below.
Students
are eligible to attend a hospital education program if they are currently
enrolled in a school (may be a state or non-state school) and are medically
cleared by hospital staff to attend the program, and where:
- they
are currently receiving treatment in the hospital as an inpatient or
outpatient, and
- are
anticipated to be absent from their base school for four or more school
days, or
- are
being treated for a chronic or acute condition that requires multiple
periods of absence from their base school;
- they
are a family member of a patient who is receiving extended medical
treatment in a hospital setting and are absent from their regular place of
residence (this service is at the discretion of the Principal, based on
student needs); or
- exceptional
circumstances exist and special consideration is authorised by the
Principal and the Regional Director.
Patients
of the Queensland Children’s Hospital typically receive teaching in their ward,
or attend classrooms as arranged in consultation with clinical staff and school
liaison teachers. Siblings of QCH patients attend the classrooms, as do
children of adult patients who are receiving treatment in local adult hospitals
(e.g. Royal Brisbane, Mater Mothers'). Students include patients of the Child
Youth Mental Health Services, and inpatients admitted through the Emergency
Department for diagnostic clarification/medical review.
