Dress and sun safety

When attending class at QCHS, students may wear either their regular school uniform or appropriate free dress. Appropriate free dress means sun-safe, neat and practical for school. A good guideline is to consider what would be acceptable at a free-dress day at the students' base school. See further guidelines for dress below:

Appropriate clothing includes:

  • T-shirts (without offensive slogans), polo shirts, long-sleeve shirts
  • Cardigans and jackets
  • Knee-length shorts, skirts, dresses, jeans and trousers
  • Closed-in shoes

Unsuitable clothing includes:

  • Cropped shirts, singlets and tops with low necklines
  • High-heeled shoes, thongs/flip-flops
  • Shorts, dresses and skirts with short hemlines

Students are encouraged to bring a hat to use during outside play time, and for participating in outdoor activities.

Mobile phone policy

The Queensland Government is committed to reducing the distraction of mobile phones and other devices to provide optimal learning environments for all state school students.

From the beginning of Term 1 2024, all Queensland state school students must keep their mobile phones switched off and 'away for the day' during school hours. Notifications on wearable devices, such as smartwatches, must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.

The decision to implement a consistent, statewide approach to putting mobile phones away during the school day is based on an independent review of Queensland's approach to mobile phones, which was completed in July 2023.

The statewide review heard from students, parents, school staff and experts about the changing impacts of technology on the health, wellbeing and education of young people, with a number of key themes emerging.

At QCHS Mobile phones should not be brought to school by students. If it is considered necessary for the student to have a mobile phone for after school use then the phone needs to be turned off and handed to office staff. The phone will be locked securely in the school office throughout the day. Under special consideration some students are permitted to keep their phone on their person while attending the school, this permission can only be granted by the school Principal.
